Seaford - East Sussex - England

A Farewell Note from your Webmaster, Mick Barrett
mick@seaford-sussex.co.uk

It is with great sadness that I am closing down my Seaford web-site after 23 years of activity.

This banner introduced the web-site www.seaford-sussex.co.uk which was founded in October 2000, a time when there were not many websites about our town.  I retired to Seaford in 1996 after nearly 30 years at the European Space Agency in Germany.  They were  exciting and stressful years so I was desperate to find something to do in my retirement.  I soon found Seaford Museum where there was a very active group of volunteers (no paid staff) with such nice people.  I soon joined the committee where I served for nearly 20 years.

Coming from a highly technical background, I was asked if I could make a website for the Museum.  I had absolutely no knowledge of computer programming but within 6 weeks I had the first pages on-line.   I really caught the bug for designing web pages and Seaford-Sussex soon followed.

The Town Clerk was also interested in a site for Seaford Town Council and I had it on-line in 2003.  This ran until the council decided to pay a professional company in 2005.
At first, the Seaford-Sussex site grew slowly. I used to wander round the town asking shops, restaurants, hotels, etc. if they wanted advertising on the World Wide Web, offering absolutely free listing or even free web pages. Then it grew enormously. There were so many subjects relevant to life in our town, be it local clubs, weather, transport, events, businesses, tides, etc. Also local video clips by talented Seaford residents all added to the range of pages. There were times when I was working more hours a week than I did during my working life.

Large sites for several clubs etc. soon developed and it was exciting to design suitable layouts, A few of these are still in use.

The following sites are no longer active:
  • Friends of Seaford Library - Campaign for our new library.
  • Seaford in Bloom – Several gardens were opened to visitors
  • Friends of Boenningstedt later Seaford Twinning Association
  • Seaford Gardening Club – Closed.
  • Seaford Waste Forum – Included objections to Newhaven incinerator.
  • Seaford Lecture & Literary Club - Closed.
  • The Royal Air Forces Association Seaford – Closed.
  • Seaford Family Focus Group - Closed

The following now have their own web-sites:
  • Seaford Photographic Society
  • St Thomas More Church
  • Friends of the Cuckmere
  • East Blatchington Pond
  • St James’ Trust
  • The National Trust Seaford Association
I have met so many nice people on this project. Sadly so many are no longer with us and as I approach my 88th birthday, I feel it is time to let this site go in an orderly fashion. It has been a pleasant hobby providing these services for the past 23 years. I hope that the newer sites for Seaford will continue to serve the community.
Many thanks to local experts who helped me in the early years of web design and the members of local clubs, etc. who provided material for publishing.

Goodbye
